Global Warming

Climate Change or Global Warming is the gradual rise of Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which can lead to many problems such as it absorbing solar energy and melting the glaciers and ice flats. This may not seem like much but in about 100 years the sea levels would have risen and many islands such as the Maldives, would have been flooded. Global warming can also cause mass extinction of animals.

Some Greenhouse gases such as Carbon Dioxide absorb Solar Energy so they make the atmosphere warmer. The Greenhouse Gas emissions can also cause the ozone layer to deteriorate.

Some of the things that cause major greenhouse gas emissions are:

  1. Burning of fossil fuels to produce energy for heating and electricity - This accounts for 31% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

  2. Transportation - This accounts for 15% of global Greenhouse gas emissions.

  3. Animal Agriculture - this accounts for 11% of global Greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2019, humans released 37 billion tonnes of CO2 into the Earth's atmosphere. This is more than the entire amount of Carbon Dioxide that was ever released since the Industrial Revolution took place. In 2000, the global surface temperature was 14.4°C but it became  higher in 2016 due to global warming.

This problem is becoming exponentially serious and is starting to affect humans directly. For example, greenhouse gases like Carbon Dioxide contribute to respiratory disease from smoke and air pollution. Diseases like COPD, asthma and lung cancer are all caused or aggravated by CO2 emissions.
